Shri Sadguru said

The result of one's action (karma) accrues to one in three ways viz., Sanchitam (accumulated deeds of many births till date), Prarabdham (that part of the deeds of previous births, whose results are to be experienced in this birth), Aagami (deeds of the present and future). In the case of a vaishnava all these get destroyed by devotion to Shri Rama. The vaishnavas lead a life on this earth only as per the will of Shri Rama, and not due to their Prarabdha karma. If they surrender totally to Shri Rama, immediately they will be free from all earthly bondage. The vaishnavas earn sorrows by hurting the bhagavatas (by words or deeds), and gain happiness due to the mercy of Lord Hari. They are not controlled by karma. A Bhagavan Shri Vishnu is Omniscient, He never subjects His devotees to hardships. The foolish can never understand the true reason for the sorrows of the sadhus. In reality, Shri Bhagavan stages a drama (as part of His Leela) testing a sadhu, only with a divine wish to bring to light the glory of the bhakta. Hence the karma of the devotee is not the reason for the difficulties encountered by him.

Shri Sadguru continued

Thus drinking the nectar of the advice of Shri Nanak, those chaste women got a fresh lease of life. As per the advice of Shri Guru Nanak, they adopted the Vaishnava Dharma, got rid of all sins, and claimed high esteem on this earth. Thus Guru Nanak revealed vividly the glory of the Divine Names of Lord Hari standing as the ultimate refuge to those who have lost track of the righteous path. One who reads this pious glory of Guru Nanak gets rid of sins and reaches Vaikuntha the divine abode of Lord Vishnu.

Thus ends Chapter Fourteen entitled 'Nanak Deva Charitam' of Book IX of Shri Vaishnava Samhita composed by Shri Shri Krishna Premi Swamigal.

Don’t you have Shri Rama the sacred touch of whose feet, instantly purifies Ahalya, who was molested by Indra, to help you? Many notorious sinners of this world like Ajamila attained Vaikuntha in the past only with the help of the Divine Name. When you have this all powerful Hari Nama on hand, you need not abandon your lives. Vaikuntha, the land of eternal bliss, is within your reach. If you ignore my words and commit suicide, you will all become ghosts, without fail. Enough of yoga, penance and Vedic rituals. Vaikuntha is attainable purely with the strength of Nama kirtan.

The women said

Spoiled by the wicked and hence abandoned by our husbands, we have lost our dignity. In this condition what value life has for us? Oh! Gurudeva! Our chastity which is more lovable than life, is lost. Alas! We will not have any place in the heavens.

Guru Nanak said

You women are good hearted and faultless. You have been spoiled forcefully by the yavana’s. You are not fit to perform the acts enlisted by the Vedas. Moreover, I do not know the way of deliverances out of this sin. Even your progeny cannot have any claim to follow the path of dharma ordained by the Vedas. Yet, you can chant the Divine Name of Lord Shri Rama. Rama Nama Kirtan is capable of bestowing all good on anyone who chants it. This is the best way of deliverance out of all sins.

Oh! Fortunate women! You are welcome. Please listen to me. Out of kindness I tell you this. You are all born in respectable families, and are adorned with noble character. It is a pity that you were spoiled by the yavana’s and hence deserted by your relatives. You are all blemishes. You have been molested forcefully by the wicked yavana’s. Yet deserted by the relatives who have faith in dharma, you have come to the stage now that you want to forsake your lives. Oh, women! Human life is invaluable. Do not abandon that. Alas! This great holy land of India was completely under the control of the mlecchas who were encouraged by the Kaliyuga ( to indulge in cruel deeds). Well armed and mounted on horses, the mlecchas went to all villages and cruelly massacred the people who had righteous ness as the only object of life. They threw children in to well; molested chaste women, and cut off the heads of crores of Hindus. They carried on cow slaughter everywhere, demolished the temples and robbed money, gold and jewels. Harming people in many ways, the wicked mlecchas established their rule all over India. The women who were raped by the muslims, and hence deserted by their kinsmen decided to commit suicide, and came to the bank of river Ganga. At that time, Guru Nanak, the greatest vaishnava appeared there and with great compassion, gave them refugee.

The bhagavatas said

Some people develop devotion to Lord Vishnu, neglecting the path suggested by the Vedas. What is the reason for that?

Shir Sadguru said

Oh! Sadhus! Lord Janardana is the origin of all Shastras. He never gets satisfied with any path that ignores the value of the Shastras, even if followed by His own devotees. Hence, a brahmana should worship Lord Hari adhering to the Varnashrama Dharma (the caste system) which is marred by this Kaliyuga. Oh! Sadhus! The people of the low castes, the muslims and other foreigners have no right to follow the path shown by the Vedas and smritis and adopt the rituals suggested by therein. But everyone has the right to perform Hari Nama Kirtan everywhere according to the Shastras. Those who have no claim on the rituals earmarked by the Vedas and Smritis, have only one refuge, viz. Rama Nama Kirtan.

The thief said

You a great bhagavata devoid of lust and anger. Oh, exponent of the Vedas! With great affection, you are considering me, a thief , as your brother. I have taken a new birth due to your darshan. Please bless me with the wealth of Rama Nama. What help will this earthly wealth render me?

Shri Sadguru continued

Having spoken thus, the thief fell at the feet of Shri Tulasidasa and wept, out of love and devotion. The benevolent Tulasidasa put his hand on his head, and blessed him, and secretly taught him the holy Taraka Mantra. From that day, the thief, who had become a true vaishnava, stayed in the math and served Tulasidasa and the other sadhus. The pious bhagavatas always save even the most wicked persons, correcting their evil traits. Men get surges of wickedness the moment they come into contact with sadhus even though their aims are bad. The vaishnavas shower mercy upon thieves and wicked ones. They do not have any attachment even to the wealth they have learnt with efforts.

Tulasidasa said

You are a great vaishnava. Shri Rama has bestowed His mercy on you. You have had the darshan of Shri Rama, who is inaccessible even to the Vedas. No gate-keepers are appointed in this math. In reality, you have seen Lord Rama and Shri Lakshmana only. You are wallowing in poverty. This compels you to steal. You can take all that you want. I am only happy about it. This wealth is not mine. Certainly this belongs to Lord Rama. Shri Rama, the Lord of Devi Sita, is the Lord of the world. He is the father of both of us. SO, this is naturally our common property. So you cannot be committing a sin in taking this wealth. Give up all worries and fears. All the wealth of the father rightly belongs to the son.

At midnight, when Nama kirtan, was going on, the thief gathered bags of grains and lots of money and started to rush out of the math. But he was not able to go out of the math as he was threatened by the sight of the soldiers. Meanwhile, the merciful Tulasidasa, who had great love for the poor, came there chanting the Name of Shri Rama. The thief was rightened to see Tulasidasa. Mahatma Tulasidas had constructed a big math on the bank of river Ganga in Kashi. He was honoring the sadhus daily, making them assemble in the math. Daily, thousands of exalted personalities used to come and stay there chanting the Taraka Mantra, the Divine Name of Shri Rama. Many rich men devotedly extended help in cash and kind to carry on the offering of food to the sadhus in the math. Revelling in the mercy of Shri Rama, Tulasidasa, the self renounced, was engaged in the chanting of Rama Nama, free of all worldly attachments and responsibilities.

Shri Sadguru said

Those who usurp the hard-earned property of others certainly become lepers in their next birth. The only cause of all of our suffering is accumulated sin of the previous birth. (If not, what else is the reason?) Will Bhagavan, the ocean of compassion, impose sufferings on the souls? The merciless ones never help even those who struggle hard, with their families, due to poverty. A king who snatches away the riches of the well-to-do, and with affection and generosity, helps the poor (with the money), is considered to be the greatest of all those who have learnt the Shastras. Only he is a true sadhu who never covets another man’s property even when he has to beg for food. He who is moved by the very sight of a suffering poor man and readily comes forward to give away his wealth is the greatest of all generous men.

All the Brahmanas were astonished to see that. They developed very great faith in the resplendent strength of Shri Rama Nama. As he was worshipped by Tulasidasa, that brahmana, who had committed the sin of brahmahatti, was relieved of all sins and developed deep devotion to Lord Shri Rama

Do not entertain this doubt. If one chants the Divine Name of Shri Rama repeatedly, his heart gets purified very easily. A devotee of Shri Bhagavan never gets lost.

The Brahmanas said

Oh, man of great intelligence! All said, we are not convinced of the glory of Nama kirtan. Still we have great doubt about its power.

Tulasidasa said

Oh! Exponents of the Vedas! I do not doubt the excellence of Nama kirtan. Though this man has committed sin of brahmagatti, he has become a mahatma from the moment he chanted the Divine Name of Shri Rama. Even one who has committed the five worst sins, should be venerated as a great man if he meditates upon Shri Rama. It is beyond doubt. Oh! Masters of the Vedas! Oh, fortunate one! This man has committed brahmahatti (killing of a brahmana). He is an outcast. He is a sinner and a wicked man. He is not fit to have dinner with us.

Tulasidasa replied

Killing a brahmana or drinking wine or whatever be the sin a person commits, he will be immediately absolved of all sins, if he chants the Divine Name of Shri Rama

The Brahmanas said

Oh! Vaishnava! In that case, what is the use of the methods of redemption of a sinner (prayaschitta) suggested by seers in our Dharma Shastras.

Shri Tulasidasa replied

Oh! Exponents of the Vedas! Don’t you know that those very same seers have emphasized the greatness of Rama Nama in the Shastras? All other methods of deliverance wipe out only the sins. But the glory of Rama Nama roots out even the desire to commit sins. Those who neglect the chanting of th Divine Name of Shri Bhagavan, which is accepted by the Shastras (as the redeemer of sins) and seek the help of other methods of deliverance commit a sin again.

Once, some great Brahmanas, who were given to the repeated views of the Vedas, were invited to the hermitage of Tulasidasa. There, they were honored with food and other amenities. At that time, unexpectedly, an uninvited brahmana came there chanting the Name of Shri Rama in a very sweet voice. Philanthropic Tulasidasa, was very happy to see him. He welcomed the brahmana very kindly, and asked him to join the dinner. Other Brahmanas present there, became very angry to see that poor brahmana joining them for dinner.

The magnificence of the Divine Name of Shri Rama is extolled by the Vedas and Dharma Shastras. The great merit of it is that the chanting of that Nama eradicates the agony of samsara. Why should noble men take other vain efforts to free themselves of sorrow? It is very easy to get rid of all sorrows with the help of the chanting of the Divine Name of Shri Rama. Ajamila, a sinner, unintedly chanted the Divine Name of Shri Narayana when he called his sone named Narayana. As a result, he attained final beatitude in that birth itself. The sinner Kshatrabandhu chanted the Name of Govinda, when he wa under the control of Yama, and thus reached the holy feet of Lord Vishnu. Even Jeevanti, a prostitute attained final beatitude as she had trained a parrot to utter the Divine Name of ‘Rama’ repeatedly. Ahalya who was cursed by her husband for her unmoral behavior too became worthy of veneration on this earth owing to the mercy of Lord Shri Rama. The hunter Valmiki gained lofty wisdom and hence prime importance among seers as a result of ceaseless chanting of the Divine Name of Shri Rama. The glory of the Divine Name of Shri Rama, the Taraka mantra, which is spoken highly of, by the scriptures, is beyond all words. It is understood by the noble men automatically and effortlessly.

Shri Sadguru continued

Having spoken thus, the agitated emperor Akbar confined Tulasidasa in that house by force, and went away. Mahatma Tulasidasa pleaded to Shri Maruti to help the emperor to get the unattainable darshan of Lord Shri Rama. The merciful Shri Hanuman in turn prayed to Shri Rama. But Shri Rama, the Lord of the world did not agree to bless that muslim with His darshan. At that time, Shri Hanuman, along with His monkey troop, arrived in Delhi and started causing havoc all over the city. Finding the entire city under the control of thousands of monkeys, the emperor got bewildered, and surrendered to Shri Tulasidasa. Thus Tulasidasa convinced the king, revealing the strength of the army of Shri Rama. Immediately, Shri Hanuman, worshipped by Tulasidasa, disappeared with his troop of monkeys and thus relieved the emperor of fear. The startled emperor sent Tulasidasa back to Kashi in palanquin without much delay. No one can gain the darshan of Shri Rama through any false means, giving up the right path. Hence, one should cultivate unfaltering devotion.

Thus ends Chapter Eleven entitled ‘Shri Tulasidasa Charitam III’ of Book IX of Shri Vaishnava Samhita composed by Shri Shri Krishna Premi Swamigal

The king said

In that case, you please favor me with firm devotion to the Supreme Soul Shri Rama, at the earliest.

Tulasidasa said

Oh! king! Only a pious devotee can acquire premature Bhakti through simple devotional acts like the chanting of the Divine Name of Shri Rama, listening to the holy story of Shri Rama, meditating upon the divine form of Shri Rama, singing in praise of the noble qualities of Shri Rama, offering Pooja to Shri Rama’s holy feet, daily serving Shri Rama in many ways, and surrendering to Shri Rama completely.

The king replied

Lord! You are unnecessarily prattling just to convince me. SHow your deity to me and go back to Kashi. Lord! If you do not help me in getting the darshan of Shri Rama, you will find it impossible to reach Kashi.
