Oh! Ocean of compassion! Benefactor of the bhaktas! Raghava! Lord of Devi Janaki! My venerations to You. I shall not concentrate on anything other than Yourself. Oh! Spouse of Devi Mythili! My devotion aims at You alone. It knows no other deity. My pure premature Bhakti should get established on you alone in each one of my births, due to your mercy. I am not interested in attaining Vaikuntha or any empire. Oh! Storehouse of grace! Please grant me unflittering devotion to Your holy lotus feet. I am not disturbed by poverty or the difficulties of maintaining the household. Oh, Lord! Due to Your mercy, the whole world is favorable for me.

Oh! The best of the bhaktas! I am pleased with your noble qualities. It seems you will give away anything the moment you hear My Divine Name. I have not seen a sadhu, as great as you are, in this world. Hence I have come here to have your darshan. I learn you are a totally dispassionate person as you have perm Bhakti as the only object of life. Even then My darshan should not go in vain. You as Me for any boon quite freely.

At that time, there came a poor man in rags, shivering in the encircling clod. Seeing Kabir, he begged him to give that cloth he had. Perceiving that poor man, who was singing the Divine Name of Lord Shri Rama, Kabir was overwhelmed by ecstasy. He gave away the sari. Oblivious of his kinsmen, who were suffering from unquenched thirst and hunger, mahatma Kabir, with a cheerful countenance, presented that sari to that old man. The same moment, gratified by the generosity of the bhakta, that old man took an exquisite form, which was very pleasing to the eyes. The Lord, Shri Rama, who is not attained even by the yogis, who has the hue of the green grass, who holds the bow Kodanda, who has charming lotus-eyes, who is clad in gorgeous yellow silk attire, who has broad shoulders, who bears the quiver on His shoulder, who has a captivating smile on His countenance and who is the ocean of compassion stood there blessing Kabir with His glance, His hand fixed in the ‘Abhaya’ posture. Getting this darshan of the ocean of compassion, Shri Rama, his beloved Lord, Kabir lost consciousness and fell at His holy feet. The son of Devi Kousalya, the boundless ocean of mercy, the lover of His devotees, Shri Hari, held up Kabirdasa and consoled him with words as sweet as nectar.

Once, as he was pressed hard by the repeated requests of his wife to take care of the household, he wove a sari with great efforts. With an intention of selling it, Kabir, the bhakta reached the market with that sari and sat in a place. His mind, which stood above the material world, did not take interest in business. Involuntarily, it got fixed at the holy feet of Lord Shri Rama. Many people came, made enquiries to Kabir about the price of the sari, got no reply, and hence went away thinking that he was fast asleep. When Kabir regained consciousness, he realized that night had befallen and all have left the market place. Hence the mahatma too went homeward.

Endurance, truthfulness, good conduct, charity and honesty are the unwithering blossoms valued in the offering to Lord Hari. Lord Hari is not pleased by a mere offering of the blossoms of Champaka, Ashoka and Punnai. He is gratified only by the good qualities of the bhakta. Shri Hari, the Lord of all universe, is, with mercy and joy, always at the heels of a noble bhakta who is adorned with all good qualities. Though Kabir was a householder, he did not engage himself in money-making activities. Hence, his family was wallowing in poverty. Kabit, the ascetic, was always meditating on Lord Shri Rama and was chanting the Divine Name of his Lord. He did not think of the mundane affairs. His wife was clad in rags. His children suffered grueling hunger. Yet, for Kabir, the bhakta, the entire universe seemed nothing but a manifestation of Lord Shri Rama. He lived in a very poor hut with so many rents on the ceiling. Still unmindful of it, the courageous Kabir was engaged in deep meditation on Shri Rama.

Ramananda perceived Kabir dancing, drenched with tears and hairs standing on end on his person. Shri Ramananda realized that Kabir was a soul blessed by Shri Rama. Voluntarily he embraced Kabir and reached the height of joy. Shr Ramananda, the unfailing refuge of the sadhus, mercifully chanted the ‘Taraka Mantra’ viz. “Rama’ in the ears of Kabir, on his own accord. When the great gnaw came to know that his disciples had ill-treated the sadhu Kabir, Shri Ramananda became very sad. From that day onwards, Shri Ramananda started distributing vaishnava deeksha to all and accepting disciples without any distinction of caste or creed.

Thus ends Chapter Four entitled ‘Kabirdasa Charitam III’ of Book IX of Shri Vaishnava Samhita composed by Shri Shri Krishna Premi Swamigal.

Oh, low-born! It is a great offense even to look at the muslims who are sinners. Hence please go back to your place.

Shri Sadguru said

Hearing these words, Kabirdasa for overwhelmed with sorrow. Longing for the darshan of the guru Shri Ramananda, he started weeping bitterly, standing there. As he was adorned with the noble quality of not blaming others, he paid reverence to the Brahmanas. In self-pity, cursing himself, he reached the banks of the Ganga. Seated on one of the steps leading to the waters of the holy Ganga, he was immersed in sorrowful thoughts. He sat there with an ardent desire to have a darshan of the guru, giving up food and sleep. Very early in the morning, the great saint Ramananda reached the banks of Ganga to have a holy bath. Chanting the Divine Name ‘Rama’, that seer laid his adorable feet on the steps where Kabir was seated. Unexpectedly coming in touch with the holy feet of the guru Kabir was overcome with joy. He stood up there with folded hands. A his desire was fulfilled, Kabir started dancing in joy, repeatedly saying “How fortunate I am!”.

The Brahmanas said

Oh! Wicked muslim! Select a guru suitable to you and lead a life as envisaged by your religion. You are not fit to learn the vaishnava teaching and become a vaishnava. How great is mahatma Ramananda and how low you, a muslim, are! Darkness and light cannot go hand in hand. You two cannot join together. That is quite certain and leave this place.

Even then the bhakta, Kabir, pleaded to them and with folded hands, requested them to help him.

Darkness is dispelled by the rising sun and so is Maya removed by the will and grace of the guru. All heat and longing of the earth at the rise of the moon with its cool rays, and so does the heat of the worldly worries, at the altar of the sad guru. Only food can console the hungry men. Water is the only solace to the thirsty persons. In the same way only the preachings of the sad guru bring peace to the people engaged in mundane life on this earth. People engage themselves in the study and discussion of Shastras unnecessarily. Unquestionable and doubt-free wisdom can be attained only with the help of the sad guru through his teachings. If the person reaches the sad guru and serves him daily, he secures unattainable wisdom automatically. The calf cannot live without the milk of its mother. The plant cannot survive in the absence of rain. Similarly a disciple cannot survive devoid of the guru.

Shri Rama, the gracious, always supports His bhaktas. He protects His bhaktas on this earth in different subtle ways. Thus Shri Rama, the Lord of Janaki, constantly protected Kabir the gnaw, who used to roam about the earth as a mad man.

That cruel man shouted at Kabir at the height of his anger. But the blemishless mahatma Kabir did not get angry with him. He took the infuriated merchant at his word. Reaching home, he spent a long time pondering on this. He became very sad at the sight of the great bhagavatas, who were sitting hungry on his portico singing in praise of the Lord. He decided to pledge his wife. Taking her with him, he went to the merchant again. Kabirdasa left his wife there, collected the necessary grocery items from the chettiar and returned home. Later with due respect he fed all the vaishnavas sumptuously. His wife went inside the chettiar’s house and locked herself in a room away from his reach. There she engaged in meditation on Shri Rama.

The broad-minded Kabir wanted to treat them in the most hospitable manner possible. When he found that there was nothing at home to serve them, he went to the market to get some food stuff. Finding a rich merchant (a chattier), Kabir pleaded to him to supply some provisions. That stingy man got angry and uttered impolite words to Kabir who wanted some provision free of cost.

Once, Gnanadeva, the great vaishnava along with Namadeva reached the house of Kabir. Kabir was immensely happy to receive those vaishnavas, staunch bhaktas of Lord Panduranga, at this house. He worshipped them, offering seats and feet-wash. Thus worshipped by Kabir, those exalted personalities and bhaktas of Lord Panduranga sat on his portico and carried on Hari bhajan.

On this earth, those who love only wealth and carnal pleasure, fail to understand the pious hearts of the bhaktas, who cherish loving devotion towards Shri Bhagavan. The pure and innocent bhaktas resemble guileless children. As they are engrossed in loving devotion to God, they fail to realize what ir worth doing and what is not. The pious sadhus become ready to sacrifice everything including theie wives, children, wealth, property, house and fame in order to serve the great sadhus. Those foolish ones who deceive such pure-hearted sadhus and vaishnavas are doomed to attain only hell.
